It’s not often that Louisianans celebrate second place. Our state boasts the nation’s leading sports teams, certainly the nation’s best cuisine, and it remains Sportsman’s Paradise. As a state, we’re proud of excellence. This week, Americans United for Life ranked Louisiana as the second most pro-life state in the country. Louisiana is not abortion-free yet, but we are headed there! I am proud of our Attorney General, Jeff Landry, and Solicitor General Liz Murrill, who fought for life before the U.S. Supreme Court. I’m proud of our legislative majorities who aren’t afraid to work with LFF to enshrine life-respecting protections. I’m proud of our pastors, who engage with our public officials from Baton Rouge to Washington, D.C. I’m proud of our Congressmen, who are leading the charge to protect the Hyde Amendment. When it comes to life, Louisiana still leads the way. I’m not going to sugar coat it: the Biden Administration shows no interest in the pro-life policies that a wide majority of Americans support. That means that Louisiana will need to lean heavily on our elected leaders – from our delegation in D.C. to Governor Edwards to our legislature – to be the firewall needed on the issue of life. I’m confident that, as we approach the 2021 legislative session, that your voice will be heard on the issue of life – but you must use it. Plus, it would be really nice to claim that #1 pro-life spot back from our neighbors to the north. President Biden has reinstated the so-called Mexico City Policy, which allows federal dollars to promote abortion overseas. This policy seems to go back and forth depending on who is in power, but we will always look for a more permanent legislative solution so that taxpayer dollars aren’t being spent for this inexcusable purpose. LFF ally and Congressman Mike Johnson is leading the charge to save the Hyde Amendment, which Congressional Democrats are hoping to scuttle on their way to fully funding all abortions in the United States. At present time, the Amendment prohibits federal dollars from being spent on abortions. We’re also mourning the loss of former State Rep. Steve Carter, who passed away this week at the age of 77. Known for always having a smile, a kind word and a pleasant presence at the Capitol. Steve will be missed. Our prayers are also with his family. We’re sticking together and we’re committed to fighting for the reforms and protections that Louisiana needs – regardless of the damage done in Washington, D.C.
