Though adversity has frequently visited Louisiana, we have almost always faced a threat we could see and define. COVID-19 is different; this invisible enemy marches through Louisiana, unlike any opponent we’ve ever faced before.
Despite this global threat, Louisiana has responded in a way that, I believe, positions us for a blessing from above. You see, Louisiana has turned to God in prayer!! Rather than simply fussing about the government, many are appealing to a higher power for strength and sustenance.
Our battle is nowhere near over! Louisiana is now considered by many to be the next epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the world. Earnest and fervent prayer is needed now more than ever.
Governor John Bel Edwards asked LFF pastors to pray for him – “to have wisdom and courage to do what is necessary” — bolstering my confidence in his ability to tackle this problem because I know that God always provides wisdom to those who ask.
Hundreds of you have stepped up by participating in the Governor’s Day of Prayer, praying and fasting from home, and writing notes of encouragement to public officials!
We believe that the Holy Spirit is busy positioning us for success in the Pelican State!
It is important that we continue to honor the suggested health guidelines to arrest the spread of COVID-19, but it’s also important that we teach our children, serve our neighbors, and plan for the breakthrough just ahead. It’s an uncertain time for many, but Unite714 prayer will get us all through it.
Here are a few items of interest to note as you head into the weekend:
Congress is expected to pass a $2 trillion stimulus package today, which, upon approval by President Trump, will authorize quick payments directly to qualified parties. Amounts will be based upon your 2019 tax returns (or 2018, if you haven’t filed your 2019 return yet, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says he plans to have all checks distributed within three weeks. Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson and Attorney General Jeff Landry will join me Monday morning for an 11 a.m. conference call to unpack details of the CARE Act and Louisiana concerns. Pastors and non-profit leaders: we'll be contacting you later today with the details.
Governor Edwards signed an Executive Order this week that limits unnecessary movement, but, in it, affirmed that the church and its staff are “essential providers” and are needed to assist the state in combatting this threat. You can read that order here.
The stock market began an apparent rebound in the second half of this week, signaling that investors are pleased to see an aggressive U.S. economic response. We have a long way to go to right this economy, but God is up to something BIG!
Louisiana’s favorite and Saints standout Drew Brees and his wife have pledged $5 million to help feed hungry families during the COVID-19 outbreak. He named Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner, Walk-Ons, Waitr, and others as partners. We love seeing private sectors step up to serve others.
Finally, President Trump’s approval ratings continue to climb; meanwhile, 70 percent of Americans say they’re praying for health and healing for the nation, and less than 44% say they trust the media’s coverage of the COVID-19.
Stay tuned, stay safe, and stay alert for those around you who need assistance.
