Special Session Update

May 25, 2018

Friend,

As we settle into this 2018 Second Extraordinary Session, the Louisiana legislature clearly hasn’t reached a consensus on putting a budget in place. A budget bill has not been introduced and the $1.4 billion in temporary taxes expiring next month looks destined to a permanent sunset. Some discussion of keeping a portion of the temporary state sales tax penny is being considered.

The first big vote of this special session went against Governor John Bel Edwards when HB11, his signature sales tax measure, failed on a 6-11 party-line vote.

HB27 by House GOP Chair Rep. Lance Harris would renew a third of the temporary penny that’s expiring and do away with some sales tax breaks. The bill requires a supermajority on the House floor. “It’s going to be difficult to get 70 votes,” Harris said. House Democrat Chair Robert Johnson, speaking to Harris, added, “You’re going to have some trouble on the House floor getting votes.”  (Source: LaPolitics - Subscribers)

Mrs. Jessie Valcarcel Richey
Wednesday, May 23, 2018

LFF sends condolences to our friend and former political consultant Dan Richey and family whose precious wife and mother, Jessie, passed away Wednesday morning. In remembering this kind lady, I think of her smile. Her joy was contagious! She passionately loved and supported her husband and children, as she loved and served the Lord through serving others. Please keep Dan, their children Will, Aida, Joe, JP, and their grandchildren in your prayers! Arrangements are still pending and Mrs. Jessie's obituary will be updated soon.

In His Service,
Gene
