June 11, 2021

Dear Friend,

The 2021 Louisiana legislative session is officially over. All that remains is the speculation of Governor Edwards’ intentions regarding several pieces of legislation which await his final nod. He issued 12 new vetoes on Wednesday night that dealt mostly with fiscal issues, and we await his final decision on a key bill in LFF’s package: SB 156, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

LFF supporters have flooded his office with phone calls and emails requesting that he allow the bill to become law. We know there has been enormous pressure from the Biden Administration to veto any bills that segregate biological men and women. We remain hopeful that he will put Distinctively Louisiana Values ahead of D.C. politics.

The legislature returned numerous wins for LFF supporters this year.

They passed SB 156, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, by substantial margins. We blocked proposals which would have expanded abortion and forwarded 5 pro-life bills. We advanced over 143 Election Reform bills, including Sen. Hewitt’s SB 221 which put many necessary reforms in place. The Slidell Casino measure was fought to the final moments of the session – passing in a wounded and curious status. That battle is far from over, and awaits a vote of the St. Tammany Council. LFF was honored to ally with dozens of legislators on these important issues.

On the other hand, the legislature did authorized significant gambling measures in Louisiana,  kindergarten was made mandatory for 5-year-olds, diminishing parents’ discretion when it comes to educating their kids.

Overall, LFF’s made an incredible impact this year. We'll provide a full update to you next week, however, you can see LFF’s Bills to Watch list updated below: (click the photo below to expand the image)

Simultaneous to the end of session was the LFF Leadership Academy. Training the next generation of leaders is part of the mission of Louisiana Family Forum. The 2021 Leadership Academy was intense, informative, and hugely encouraging as we connected with some of the Louisiana’s best and brightest young leaders.

Most of the sessions took place in the peaceful setting of Timothy Retreat Center in Baker, LA. Congressman Mike Johnson joined us to share. Joseph Backholm of FRC conducted the training. The space was provided by Attorney General Jeff Landry. Solicitor General Liz Murrill addressed the Academy on life issues and civil dialogue. State Treasurer John Schroder and several lawmakers addressed the students about current legislation as well as what initially prompted them to get into public service.

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser’s team hosted the Academy for lunch at the adjacent Pentagon Barracks. NOLA.com Journalist and Author Tyler Bridges shared insight into Louisiana's history and techniques of investigative reporting with the students.

Jonas Baamonde of Luling said, “I arrived knowing very little about what to expect and left confident in my ability to defend my stance as a conservative Christian.”

One cannot help but be encouraged about the future with leaders like this year’s Leadership Academy. A special thanks to all who made this event possible!

LFF is shifting gears as we approach the summer season. Traditionally, this is the time we work to build our supporter base to impact future elections and legislative sessions – and this year will be no different. As we continue to build on our victories, we remain hungry for more. If you want to join LFF’s mission to serve as missionaries to the Capitol, want to see more churches involved in politics, or want to protect life, liberty, and limited government in Louisiana, please click here to make a contribution towards our efforts.
