Dear Friends

Happy New Year! We are blessed to enter 2023 with LSU, Tulane and Saints all in the winner’s column and LFF ungirded by your steadfast financial support!

Thanks to you, LFF is a mere $9000 away from meeting our 2022 year-end $100k goal, and remember, that’s with delayed mail still making its way to 655 St Ferdinand, BR, LA 70802!

Your financial support directly impacts LFF’s work at the Capitol – and we are already in full preparation mode for this year’s Legislative Session!

Thank you for your partnership with LFF, and may 2023 be Louisiana’s best!

Right now, the US House of Representatives is voting on its next Speaker of the House, and there is no certain outcome. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) served as the Speaker when Republicans were last in control, but his reelection thus far has proven to be highly contentious.

Louisiana’s own Steve Scalise and Mike Johnson are openly referred to as suitable substitutes and considered rising stars in the GOP. Louisiana is well represented in this leadership equation.

This could be a long day for House Republicans. Say a prayer for this body as they deliberate today!

From FiveThirtyEight:

Republicans will start the 118th Congress with only a narrow majority in the House — just 222 seats to the Democrats’ 212.1 And six incoming Republican representatives have already said they will not vote for McCarthy for speaker. That would leave McCarthy with 216 votes at most — two shy of a majority. And that’s just the people who have publicly announced their opposition. (Several other Republicans are ideologically similar and could oppose him, too.) So this could be the first speaker election that has gone to multiple ballots since 1923.

Friend, the beginning of a new year is always an exciting, even if uncertain, time! Remember that God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. His will be done, but may we be faithful servants!
