Dear Friends, 

This Wednesday through Sunday, Louisiana lawmakers will hold a session to override Governor Edwards’ veto on Louisiana’s Congressional map. 

In order for the veto to be overridden, two-thirds of both the House and the Senate must vote in favor. Currently, supporters are still a few votes shy of the override.

While Republicans hold a majority in the Senate, they are two votes short in the House. Furthermore, three Republicans are unsure of how they will vote, including Conservative Caucus chair Blake Miguez of Erath.

If the GOP sticks together, it is likely they will garner enough support to overturn the veto as only two votes are needed from Democrats or Independents. Democrat Rep. Francis Thompson of Delhi has already expressed support for the override.

The Biden administration continues to encroach on the American people’s freedom by virtue of radical regulations which encumber constitutional rights. From high energy costs and food prices to restricted credit access and less healthcare choices, Biden's administration has multiplied the social and economic cost of living and self-government. 

Even The Hill, a left-of-center news outlet, has admitted that “Biden torched the Trump recovery.” The administration’s claim that they inherited an economy on the brink of collapse couldn’t be further from the truth.

A year ago, GDP growth was at 6.3 percent, inflation at 1.4 percent, and the average price of gasoline was $2.39. Today, GDP growth is at a meager 2 percent, inflation at 7 percent, and gas is up to $3.31.

These numbers are telling.

Four states have joined in the fight of protecting female athletes by passing legislation which prohibits biological males from competing in girls’ sports. Kentucky, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah have joined a dozen other states that have passed similar prohibitions.

Utah’s governor vetoed the bill but the state’s legislature chose to override that veto with overwhelming support – which is exactly what the Louisiana legislature needs to do this year!

Here in Louisiana, we have the opportunity to save women’s sports and protect female athletes. SB 44, or the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, would require schools to designate athletic teams according to biological sex and prevent biological males from competing on women’s teams. This bill is actually scheduled to be heard this week, unless the congressional map veto override session eclipses the hearing.

Louisiana athletes deserve a fair playing field and it’s time we deliver that.
