We have just a few weeks left in the legislative session, and that means that Governor Edwards faces very tough choices about the direction of our state. The legislature has moved clearly on a number of critical policy areas – things like protecting women’s sports, expanding access to self-defense for Louisiana residents, and capping government spending.
Now, it’s time for Governor Edwards to decide if he will join in supporting a distinctively Louisiana value, or be swayed by President Biden and liberals in Washington, D.C. We hope for the former.
And, for the governor, siding with Louisiana is a pretty safe bet. Polling data has consistently shown that more than 66% of Americans are in favor of protecting women’s sports – and the numbers in Louisiana are thought to be even higher. In fact, 82% of Louisiana legislators who voted on this bill voted YES, including a large contingency of Democrats.
In fact, here’s what one friend of LFF, Monroe Democrat Senator Katrina Jackson said about it:
“After reviewing the bill and doing research on the differences in male and female bodies, I am voting yes on this bill. Men and women distribute their weight differently, have different muscle mass and bone density. Studies show that even after gender affirming hormones, persons born male still have an advantage over their female counterparts.
I do not believe that ‘transgenders’ should ever be excluded from participating in sports based on their birth gender. However, to allow students to select which team they join could give them an unfair athletic advantage over other students. Although I understand your advocacy, all things considered and fairness to all I believe each student should participate in sports based on their gender at birth.”
If that’s not a message for Gov. John Bel Edwards to consider, I don’t know what is.
