Dear Friends

In yesterday's Family Facts, we made a mistake on naming the authors of the pro-life bills - an error for which we apologizeThe following is a clarification which expands on the descriptions of the two major pro-life bills passed this session:

Louisiana law currently requires that abortion inducing drugs must be prescribed by a licensed Louisiana physician and the first of the two drug protocol must be administered in a licensed abortion facility in our state. During this legislative session, Senator Sharon Hewitt (pictured below, right) successfully passed SB 388 which will make it a felony for chemical abortion pills to be shipped directly to any person in Louisiana. SB 388 also increases the penalty for the illegal shipment of abortion inducing drugs. Representative Laurie Schlegel handled the bill on the House floor.

The bill has gained national attention from outlets like The Daily Wire because it is getting ahead of the crisis that will be brought on by chemical abortion pills in the United States. This is a particularly crucial measure as the mail-order abortion industry is expected to move to fill the vacancies in states where abortions are outlawed.

Senator Katrina Jackson (pictured above, left) authored SB 342, Louisiana's “trigger law." Since 2006, Louisiana has had a law in place which would make abortion illegal in our state once the U.S. Supreme Court overrules the horrendous Roe v. Wade decision. This bill ensures that our statutes dealing with abortion are consistent and able to sustain a court challenge. Sen. Jackson and her House colleague, Representative Julie Emerson, successfully fought off attempts to weaken our existing statute by adding rape and incest exceptions. The Biden administration has taken aim at SB 342, calling it a “radical measure.” For more, read The Hill's "White House criticizes Louisiana abortion bill as 'radical."

Both SB 388 and SB 342 have passed both Houses of the Legislature and are on Governor Edwards’ desk. Senators Jackson and Hewitt, along with Representatives Emerson and Schlegel, did a masterful job steering these bills through the legislative process.

Please pray for Gov. John Bel Edwards – that he signs all legislation that protects life, liberty, and God's design!
