August 5, 2022 Dear Friends, The end of Roe v. Wade has been met with hysteria by many on the left, and President Biden is taking steps to validate that behavior. This week he signed an executive order that includes a provision asking the HHS Secretary to reach out to states still performing abortions and invite them to apply for Medicaid funding to ‘treat’ women who crossed state lines for an abortion. However, the Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of taxpayer funding for abortions. The president’s lawlessness is startling and bereft of any moral compass. Encouraging women to cross state lines at taxpayer expense in order to receive abortions is a direct attack on taxpayers and women - and the children whose lives are ended. After persevering through a global pandemic and two of the strongest hurricanes in the state’s history, Louisiana students showed strong improvements on the 2021-2022 state test compared to the previous year, when students were forced into virtual learning. As reported by the Louisiana Department of Education, 80% of schools improved their mastery rates when compared to 2020-2021 and reports showed that in-person learning provided a great benefit to students, with those students outperforming their classmates who attended virtually. “This progress is a true testament to the dedication of our educators to maintain high standards for students no matter the circumstance,” State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley said. The improvement rates shown extended across virtually all demographics, including the economically disadvantaged and students with disabilities. While the superintendent urged educators to continue working diligently to ensure continued student success – in particular, 3rd and 4th graders should be focused on so that their understandings are strong in all subjects – this is news to celebrate in Louisiana! |

From Business Report: The governor’s vetoes of two school choice bills as well as the language in a recent Advocate editorial are déjà vu of the battle to get school choice (charters) passed more than 25 years ago, writes Business Report founder Rolfe McCollister in his new opinion piece. History is not only repeating itself, McCollister writes, but Edwards’ actions prove that teacher unions still influence Democratic politicians like Gov. John Bel Edwards. Unions and the governor repeatedly make clear that both are more interested in protecting jobs than giving parents and children a choice to get the best education. Edwards vetoed House Bill 194, which would have given new options to children with exceptionalities—mental disability, deaf-blindness, orthopedic impairment, traumatic brain injury, autism, etc. He also vetoed Senate Bill 203, which would have impacted second- and third-grade students reading below grade level. Supporters say the bills would have given parents more flexibility to help struggling students if they believed public schools were not doing the job. That’s a free enterprise value. The governor and The Advocate simply don’t get it, McCollister writes. |
