Friends,

This week, I had the pleasure of co-authoring an op-ed with Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy to Monroe News-Star, which was published Wednesday. Entitled, “Paid family leave nurtures families, retains workers,” the piece draws attention to the many benefits for both employee and employer from paid family leave.

From the op-ed:

Paid Family Leave policy evokes a wide range of emotions from all sides of the political spectrum. Most Americans agree parents and children deserve reasonable and responsible paid leave once a newborn baby arrives, including 71% of conservative registered voters.

Pro-family/pro-life conservatives must engage in the debate regarding Paid Family Leave but work to ensure paid leave remains voluntary for the employee and does not create mandates on small businesses or added burdens on taxpayers.

This week, State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley emphasized that mandatory summer school may be on the table to curb the state’s troubling literacy rates.

“If a student in grades kindergarten, first, second, third, or fourth isn’t reading on grade level by the end of the school year, they would participate in 30 additional hours of support over the summer,” Brumley explained.

Brumley says it’s a reasonable solution given the stop-and-start that many students have faced due to hurricanes, the pandemic, and more. “We have to be laser focused on the current third and fourth graders across the state because of the unprecedented disruptions they have faced the last two years,” he said. Less than half of the state’s fourth graders are reading according to their grade level.

LFF commentary: Brumley has been a champion for Louisiana families and educational excellence - perhaps this proposal warrants consideration!

A new study this week published by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University revealed that about 75% of the country wants leaders with the following traits:

  • honest
  • courageous
  • have identifiable integrity
  • model kindness and understanding, even with people they strongly disagree wit, and
  • have a strong commitment to the idea that our country is a nation of laws.

Seventy-five percent of Americans also want robust protection for religious freedom and 77% want to lower taxes and support small businesses. Read more of the findings here.

Friends, please keep Florida, its leadership and residents in your prayers. Footage from throughout the state, particularly in the Lee County area, reveals heartbreaking destruction. We know this familiar feeling of loss and despair, but we also know the healing hand of a gracious God and the power of His people to touch those in need. So, let’s pray for our Florida family as they marshal resources and manpower to mitigate the ravages of this unwelcomed intruder.

In His Service,
