Speaker Mike Johnson

Thursday, October 26, 2023 (BATON ROUGE) –

“Today, I join countless others in celebrating the confirmation of my friend, Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson, to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House. I have known Mike for decades and witnessed his servant-leadership as a Christian, a husband, a father, an attorney, a State Representative, and a Congressman. Now, I am honored to call him Mr. Speaker!

“Mike is uniquely qualified to lead at this moment. He has principled convictions and a gentleman's demeanor, which enable him to build consensus, even with those who vigorously disagree with him. He is a happy warrior – something this country desperately needs at this time. Mike has a unique combination of courage and competence, completed by humility and a sincere faith. He loves this country and will serve us with distinction.

“That fact is evidenced by his first act as a newly-elected congressman. Mike encouraged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make a “Commitment to Civility.” Speaker Johnson will likely echo a renewal to that call for the challenges ahead and all we face as a nation.

“I've always described Mike as a man with an "S" on his chest, referring to his Superman-like qualities. I guess that was a correct assessment -- only the "S" stands for Speaker! I encourage prayer for all elected officials, but specifically for Mike, his lovely wife Kelly, and their four children, as they model Louisiana gravitas before this office and our nation.”
